Words of Comfort for the family

 

 Katherine Recker, age 90 of Alta Vista, died on Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at Colonial Manor in Elma.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Monday, November 5, 2007 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Alta Vista with Father Raymond Atwood celebrating mass.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista with Chris Ungs, Bill Hartson, Steve Hartson, Aaron Heying, Lucas Heying, and Ryan Recker serving as casket bearers.  Honorary casket bearers are Jeff Recker, Scott Recker and Neal Ungs.

Visitation will be 4:00-8:00 pm on Sunday, November 4, 2007 with a rosary at 5:00 pm and scriptural wake service at 7:00 pm at Conway - Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma..  Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home in Elma.

Katherine Rose (Meirick) Recker was born at home on February 20, 1917 to Antone and Regina (Wegner) Meirick.  She attended country school near Alta Vista and after completion of school she worked on the family farm for her father.  On September 17, 1940 she was united in marriage to Edwin Carl Recker at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Alta Vista.  After her marriage she was dedicated to farm life and raising six children with her husband on a farm west of Alta Vista, until 1982 when they retired and moved into town.

In retirement Katherine was kept busy with many activities including church choir, bowling, gardening and her birthday club.  She found enjoyment in cooking, sharing recipes, gambling on nickel machines and a good ballgame!  She loved socializing with friends and neighbors, and most of all her family.

In October of 2004 Katherine moved to Colonial Manor due to health issues, where she resided for her remaining years.  She was an active member of St. Bernard’s and the Rosary Society.  Katherine had a sunny outlook on life and was always willing to lend a helping hand to others.

Katherine is survived by her husband Edwin of Alta Vista; six children John Recker and wife Marlys of Roswell, GA, Nancy Ungs and husband Mike of Alta Vista; Kay Hartson and husband Dan of New Hampton, Karen Wyatt and husband Tom of Eldridge, IA, Robert Recker and wife Mary Jane of Green River, WY, and Joanne Heying and husband Jerry of New Hampton; 14 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one brother Dale Meirick of Alta Vista; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her parents Antone and Regina Meirick; four brothers Bernard, John, Lyle and Robert; three sisters Marcella Ruhoff, Oletha Hawn, Berneda Sherwood and four infant grand-daughters.
